Alyssa Burley: Hi! This is Alyssa Burley with Rancho Mesa’s Media Communications and Client Services Department. Thank you for listening to today’s top Rancho Mesa news brought to you by our safety and risk management network, StudioOne™. Welcome back, everyone. My guest is Lauren Stumpf, Media Communications and Client Services Specialist with Rancho Mesa. Today, we’re going to discuss the highlights of last week's Fleet Safety workshop. Lauren, welcome to the show.

Lauren Stumpf: Hi Alyssa, good to be back.

AB: For listeners who haven’t participated in Rancho Mesa’s workshops, we typically host them at the Mission Valley Library which is actually across the parking lot from our new office in San Diego’s Mission Valley. It’s a really nice central location for our local clients.

Last week, we hosted the Fleet Safety workshop and we had an overwhelming turn out. We actually had to close registrations early because we were at capacity. Lauren, tell me about the presenter and what he covered in the presentation.

LS: Jose Pineda from Travelers Insurance was the presenter. We’ve used him in the past for this workshop and he’s always entertaining. Always making it as fun as possible.

AB: That makes a huge difference.

LS: Yes, he can really keep the audiences’ attention. The presentation proved to be both educational and entertaining with lighthearted stories and audience participation. In order to emphasize the dangers of driver multitasking on the road, Pineda picked audience members to attempt spelling their ABC’s while simultaneously counting to 26. Rancho Mesa’s Greg Garcia was one of the audience members chosen to participate.  Needless to say, it’s difficult to do two things at the same time.

AB: I know that!  In a previous presentation, Jose asked me to do it.  It was really hard to switch back and forth between letters and numbers, especially trying to do it quickly. So, I totally understand that it sounds easy but it was not. Now, during the presentation, Jose says, “I’m just trying to prove to you… multitasking cannot happen. Can you go from one task to the other very quickly? Absolutely, but can you do them both? So, someone that tells me that they can be behind the wheel and…look at that phone, answer emails or just use that time as office time, it's not possible and you're going to end up hurting yourself or someone else.”

Lauren, after participating in the workshop and hearing Jose’s message, what was your greatest takeaway?

LS: It's alarming how much of a problem distracted driving has become. The workshop emphasized the need for clear communication with drivers about the consequences of using mobile devices while operating a vehicle. Jose also discussed implementing technologies to mitigate distractions. I think the most important takeaway is to education employees, create a policy that spells out what is expected for your drivers, and keep your drivers accountable.

AB: Those are all good lessons. And, the point is to save lives. No employer wants to see their employee injured in an accident. So, if we can help prevent auto accidents from happening, that’s good for our clients and their employees. Will this workshop be available for those who could not attend in person?

LS: Yeah, so we filmed the workshop and there will be a video version available to our clients in the coming days.

AB: Lauren, if listeners are interested in our online driver training courses or fleet safety resources, who should they contact?

LS: Clients should reach out to their Client Services Coordinator, or anyone at Rancho Mesa and we’ll be sure to get them in touch with the right person.

AB: Lauren, thanks for joining me in StudioOne™.

LS: Thanks Alyssa!
